I was honored to spend Saturday in Springfield, Ohio at their Juneteenth celebration. The highlight of the event was the groundbreaking of Gammon Square. The Gammon House is one of only 3 remaining stops on Ohio’s portion of the Underground Railroad that was owned by a black person – a couple to be exact: George and Sarah Gammon. It is a modest brick house built in 1850 and is set back from the street so as to be little noticed.A small and mighty group of community activists purchased the Gammon House some years ago and saved it from demolition. Slowly, with sweat, perseverance, and personal investment, that group restored the Gammon House to its current life as a house museum.Starting in early 2019, CUDA Studio worked with Urban Fast Forward to create two community plans on the south side of Springfield where the Gammon House sits. A keystone initiative of the first plan was to create a park which would give the Gammon House greater prominence and raise the civic stature of the site. More recently, CUDA Studio worked with Gammon House and the City of Springfield to design that park and improvements to the public right-of-way including a plaza, street & sidewalk improvements, street lighting and trees, and other features. The result will be Gammon Square which you can view here: https://lnkd.in/gYvypCYM

In urban design and planning "Density" is not a bad word despite what many would have you believe.I'm looking forward to speaking as part of a panel at an event called "Deliberating the 'D' Word" next week. The event is a follow up to a great article published by Soapbox, authored by AIA Cincinnati, that you can read here: https://lnkd.in/gPCnMA9g For those of us in Cincinnati (or just about every other forward-thinking community) who have been considering zoning changes which would allow incremental increases in residential density, the public discourse has become alarmingly misguided. Claims that increased density automatically brings low-income residents, crime, decay, and a level of deterioration just short of famine and pestilence, are wrong-headed and fear-based. Reasonable density developed in walkable neighborhoods is a fiscally responsible return to traditional living which strengthens communities. If this debate sounds interesting to you, join us for the discussion on June 6th (5:30-7:00pm) at Turner Construction Company, 510 Race Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.

Building on a community engagement effort led by AIA Cincinnati, and muscled through by the South Fairmount Community Council, the Cincinnati Planning Commission just approved the rezoning of 460 parcels flanking the new Lick Run Greenway. The new zoning will permit the kinds of pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use buildings that rebuild neighborhoods into vibrant places of destination. #planning #community https://lnkd.in/gFAW_dz3

We've had to make a tough call...Due to the current weather forecast and safety of our goats, monks, and Bock Beer enthusiasts, we've made the difficult decision to cancel the Bockfest Parade and all programming at Bockfest Hall on Friday Evening. Our OTR partner venues will still be operating so please patronize them. All Saturday and Sunday activities are on as scheduled! Saturday Bockfest Hall will be open from 10am to 11pm. We'll have food and drink, the 5K run, brewery tours, beer games, and live music throughout the day!Sunday Bockfest Hall will be open from 10am to 6pm. We'll have food and drink, the .05K run (my best distance), Goat yoga, the petting zoo, more tours and live music throughout the day.https://www.bockfest.com/

The 31st annual Cincinnati Bockfest is just 1 week away! The Brewery District Community Urban Redevelopment Corp., stewards of the weekend-long event for many years now, will once again host Bockfest at Findlay Park in Over-the-Rhine, March 3-5. Next Friday evening, the coolest parade in America will start at Arnold's and proceed to Findlay Park. We'll have an array of activities all weekend long including: Goat Yoga, a 5K race (and a .05K race for those who have raised underachieving to an art form), as well as tastings and historic brewery tours. (Good weather will be assured during Bockfest by virtue of the Precipitation Retaliation event taking place tonight at Northern Row brewery.)This year's Bockfest is brought to you with the generous support of Sonder Brewing. https://www.bockfest.com/
