C4 THE COURIER-JOURNAL FEATURES THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2003 Son seems disconnected from peers Dear Annie: My handsome, smart 16-year-old son has always been shy. While growing up, he had a small group of friends. However, the last couple of years he has become increasingly withdrawn, even from those he was close to before. I have tried to get "Adam" to participate in school activities, and although he takes part in sports, he will not consider anything else. He seldom participates in the social events going on at school.

When I suggest activities to do or people to call, he refuses. Adam seems perfectly content to spend time in family activities, and although we love his company, I feel he needs to do "kid" things. I don't want to risk alienating him by suggesting a counselor, but I am concerned that he is comfortable only around adults. OMAHA, NEB. Dear Omaha: Not every child needs to be pushed into the social whirl.

When Adam plays sports, does he have a problem being part of the team? Does he talk to other kids at school, even if he doesn't see them outside of class? Shyness can be debilitating for some children. Find out Talk to the parents and explain your concerns. Then either bathe your daughter before she goes to her friend's house, or tell her she is not permitted to be undressed in front of Tom. She's old enough to follow directions. Dear Readers: Today marks the second anniversary of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks.

Please take a moment out of your day to remember those who died, as well as the heroic emergency personnel who put their own lives in peril, and the courageous passengers on United Flight 93 who sacrificed themselves by bringing down the plane in Pennsylvania, preventing it from doing greater harm. Say a prayer for the continued strength of the families of those who are no longer with us, but who always will be remembered. Creators Syndicate Championship. Cannas are enjoying a late-summer Cannas spotted all over as fall nears Continued from Page CI over from that late 20th-century trend. They merge gracefully with evergreen backbones of gardens that are gussied up to tropical pitch only for the summer. They fit right into the widening interest in pond gardening. Cultivation Many cannas can be grown in shallow water.

Some are definitely aquatic (C flaccida and C. glauca, natives of our Southern swamps) Plant all cannas in full sun in a rich soil. A spot sheltered from wind helps keep the big leaves from getting tattered, although cannas are remarkably resistant to being knocked over by winds. All need ample water and a generous amount of fertilizer in late spring. The rhizomes adapt to most circ*mstances, even semi-shade, but will not flourish in poor soil.

Some gardeners swear by growing them in almost undiluted rotted manure. It is not necessary to dead head cannas as usually another flower stalk emerges from the leaf fold just below the original stalk. If you trim out seed-pods which actually are rather striking and exotic on their own be careful not to trim too deep and damage the next emerging flowers. Propagation Seed will germinate if you desire, but division is simple, and one healthy rhizome ought to expand to three times its size in a season of good growth. This allows you to either detach new rhizomes or cut large ones in pieces when you replant.

What's in a name? Canna lily is the common name attached to a large group of hybrid plants in the genus Canna, a Latin word meaning a type of reed. The hybrids are from a very complex breeding line that involves several species in the genus Canna and are now collectively called Canna generalis. Indian shot is the common name, taken from the seeds, which are round, black and very hard. (through teachers, coaches, school counselors or parents of classmates) if Adam is being ostracized or bullied, and has given up trying to be part of a group. ANNIE'S MAILBOX It also possible his preference for adults indicates a maturity he hasn't found in his peers.

If you notice discomfort or belligerence about socializing, take him to see a counselor. Otherwise, let him be. Dear Annie: I am hesitant to allow my 8-year-old daughter to sleep over at her girlfriend's house because the girl bathes with her brother, "Tom," age 12. I do not wish to expose my daughter to a boy's nudity. What do you say? MARYLAND MOM Dear Maryland: We do not recommend that children of the opposite sex bathe together past the age of 5, but there is no reason to believe that Tom will bathe with your daughter.

His attitude is a pervasive one. If mulched well and in relatively dry spots, many cannas will survive to 0 degrees. If in doubt, it's best to dig the rhizomes in the fall after the first killing frost turns foliage black. Trim the tops before digging. The dug rhizomes do best left in big, dirty clumps and set in boxes in a frost-free spot.

Cannas grown in pots or tubs can be left in the tubs. Trim off the tops and put the tubs in a frost-free spot for the winter. Check the stored rhizomes once a month, and water lightly if they seem excessively dry. Canna rhizomes never go completely dormant, and winter storage losses often are a result of drying out completely. Outdoors, winter losses are from the opposite cold and wet conditions.

Another option for those with greenhouses or sunrooms is to bring the plants indoors as tropical house-plants for the winter, if they are manageable. However, they will benefit from a short rest once a year, effected by letting the soil dry out, clipping top growth and letting the rhizomes rest a month or more before starting them into growth again. Rhizomes stored all winter are brought back to life in two ways. You can get a jump on early bloom by pot SHOW CLOCK Barua Moore 1. e4 c5 2.

It is probably correct, as alleged by Garry Kasparov, that Anatoly Karpov, who was world champion for 10 years before Kasparov, found and still finds it difficult to think of his name without that title preceding it. Ironically, it often appears that Kasparov is equally attached to the prefix "strongest player in the world." Anand, who won the World Chess Federation title in 2000 but held it for only a year, celebrated and immensely enjoyed his brief reign. "It is every sportsman's dream to play for the world title," he has observed. But compared to Kasparov and most others who held or hold the title or hope to contend for it, achieving the highest rank was, for Anand, a much lesser priority. When asked about his relative strength, Anand recently replied: "I do not want to think in macro terms.

In terms of ranking, Kasparov is number one. I have done well in the present list Anand is ranked third Personally, I want to play better, improve my chess and enjoy my life. I White threatens 27. f5, etc. Solution to BEGINNER'S CORNER: 1.
